Epi-LASIK is the latest innovation in the eye laser industry. It is considered the safest option for patients with thinner cornea or very high grade. Epi-LASIK is a “NO BLADE, NO CUT” laser procedure.
In Epi-LASIK, the surgeon uses a blunt, plastic oscillating blade called an epithelial separator to separate the sheet from the eye, instead of using a sharp blade ordinarily used in LASIK surgery. The epithelial flap is placed back on the eye and a special contact lens is set to keep the flap in place while it re-epithelizes. The contact lens protects the surface of the eye and allows the epithelial cells to grow back properly. Although the recovery period may slightly be longer than ordinary, it is still the best option for patients who are not good candidates for LASIK surgery.
